B1 Fire-Rated Carpet for Hotels & Ballrooms: What Specifiers Need to Know

"Flame retardant" is one of the most loosely used claims in the carpet trade. In a hotel or public building, it is also one of the few claims that can stop a project at inspection. This short guide explains what B1 actually means, what to ask your supplier, and how to avoid a costly substitution at the last minute.
What "B1" means
B1 is the classification under the GB 8624 Chinese standard for "difficult to ignite" building materials — broadly aligned in practice with the fire performance hotel specifiers expect across the GCC and Europe. It is frequently requested alongside, or instead of, ASTM E648 (critical radiant flux) for commercial flooring.
The exact standard required depends on the project's fire strategy and local code. Your supplier should be able to state, in writing, which test standard their product was tested to and on which construction/backing — because changing the backing can change the result.
Why hotel and ballroom projects care
- Large open floor plates — ballrooms and atria have limited escape routes; floor coverings must not contribute to flame spread.
- High occupancy — hotels, mosques, theatres and cruise ships are held to stricter interior-finish rules.
- Insurance and handover — the fire report is part of the completion package. A missing or mismatched certificate is a real risk.
The five-item fire checklist
- Standard named — B1 (GB 8624), ASTM E648, or the standard your consultant specifies.
- Tied to the product — report references the exact face fibre, backing and construction you are buying.
- Current — not a decade-old certificate for a discontinued line.
- Consistent across the order — every roll/shipment meets the same spec.
- Traceable — a named third-party lab, with a report number you can verify.
Fire rating plus real-world performance
A B1 rating does not, by itself, make a good hotel carpet. Combine it with:
- Anti-soil / stain resistance — serviceability in F&B and lobbies.
- Antibacterial treatment — relevant in healthcare, hospitality and worship spaces.
- Colour-fastness — solution-dyed yarns hold up to cleaning and light.
- Backing choice — recycled-textile soft backing improves comfort and supports green-building targets.
