How to Choose Carpet for a Hotel Project (2026 Buyer's Guide)

Choosing carpet for a hotel is a spec decision, not a shopping decision. A guest never compliments the carpet — but they always notice when it looks worn, when corridors echo, or when a ballroom changes colour halfway across the floor. For procurement teams and interior contractors, the goal is simple: pick a construction that survives 8–10 years of traffic while matching the designer's intent on day one.
Here is the checklist we walk through with hotel clients every week.
1. Match construction to traffic zone
- Guest rooms — low traffic, high visual priority. Hand-tufted or cut-pile in wool/nylon blends give warmth and acoustic comfort.
- Corridors & lift lobbies — the hardest-working areas. Specify Axminster (woven) or dense multi-level loop: it holds pattern, resists crushing and hides seams.
- Ballrooms & banquet halls — large open spans where pattern matching across 8,000 m² is the real test. Woven Axminster is the standard for a reason.
- Public areas & retail — modular carpet tiles win on replacement economics: swap one tile, not the room.
2. Verify the fire rating first
In most GCC and European projects the brief says "B1" or "flame-retardant". Do not accept a verbal yes. Ask for the test report (B1 / ASTM E648 / GB 8624) tied to the actual product and backing you are buying. Fire performance is a contractual item, not a talking point.
3. Decide wool vs nylon vs blends
- Wool — luxury feel, natural flame resistance, premium price, needs proper maintenance.
- Nylon (e.g. solution-dyed) — best colour-fastness and stain resistance for corridors and F&B.
- Blends / PP — cost-effective for back-of-house and budget tiers.

4. Insist on sampling before you commit
A screen render lies. Ask any serious hotel carpet supplier for physical samples and a strike-off (a full-size production sample) before bulk. Typical lead time: samples in 3–7 days, bulk 30–45 days.
5. Check the backing and installation method
Standard backing choice affects underfoot comfort, acoustic performance and how the floor is installed (Ashlar / Herringbone for tiles; broadloom for woven). For tiles, a recycled-textile soft backing improves comfort and supports sustainability targets.
6. Ask these five questions
- Can you hold colour consistency across the whole floor plate?
- What is the MOQ, and does it fit our phasing?
- Who signs the pre-shipment inspection?
- What fire and wear warranties apply?
- What is the realistic lead time and shipping terms?
